Photographed as the waxing quarter moon was still up but behind Snow Dome at far right, and about to set. Warm low-angle moonlight illuminates the peaks at left with bronze hour lunar alpen glow, and brightens the sky at right, plus adds the blue tint to the sky. But in the clear mountain air, the Milky Way and its starclouds still show up very well. The constellations of Aquila and Scutum are at centre.

Inspired by the Masonic themes incorporated in the opera's libretto, most of Schinkel's sets are in a resolutely Egyptian style.The pair shown here at left evokes the land reigned over by the evil Queen of the Night; the two at right are for the opera's second act, when the princely pair Tamino and Pamina progress through the realm of Sarastro. A selection of thirty-two designs was published several times from 1819 on; the Museum's impressions appear to be from the first edition. Date: ca. 1450-1500.This pair of scrolls was most likely part of an original set of eight depicting the famed scenery around the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, in the modern-day province of Hunan. Landscape paintings illustrating sites in China made famous in classical literature--places that often had nostalgic associations--flourished in the early Joseon period. Meanwhile, in contemporary Ming-dynasty China, the number and reputation of paintings on this subject dwindled compared with production in the earlier Song period. Although these scrolls are unsigned, the artist clearly aligned himself with the instantly recognizable style of the fifteenthcentury master An Gyeon. Evening Bell from Mist-Shrouded Temple represents a mountain valley where, set against high peaks in the distance, a large Buddhist temple complex is veiled in mist. Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting shares the same mood of melancholy and contemplation. The cloud-covered mountain; cold, glistening light; and vapors rising from the water all contribute to the mystery of a silent landscape.
